The first rumour received at Naples of the destruction of Messina by the earthquake, was so dreadful, that when the true account arrived, full of horrors as it was, the public mind felt relieved, and seemed to consider the effects of the calamity as objects rather Vol. m. B of curiosity than of sorrow--at least it had this effect on the English travellers, who happened to be at that time in Naples, among whom were Lord and Lady Wildwaste. Her Ladyship had been long in delicate health; she inherited the infirmities of her mother's constitution, and the climate of Italy was prescribed as a palliative.-- Mr. Mowbray, their friend, was also there, and it was proposed, as his Lordship had a yacht for sea-excursions, that they should visit those parts of the coast of Sicily and Calabria where the havoc was described to have been greatest. They embarked immediately, and on the third day after, reached the harbour of Messina. The sight of the ruins, the tottering walls, the broken arches, and the multitude of afflicted individuals still lamenting their losses, affected Lady Wildwaste so deeply, that she felt herself incapable at first of going on shore; and her husband, by whom she was very tenderly beloved, was induced to remain with her, while Mowbray went alone.
